Pioneer Acres of Alberta is a history museum containing multiple exhibit spaces including the Grain Academy, the Pioneer Truck Museum, and an original homestead building.

Community Museum Technician #

We are seeking one employee for the position of Community Museum Technician for the summer employment term.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this position a candidate must be registered with Young Canada Works, and meet all the following criteria:

  • Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada,
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada,
  • Between the ages of 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment,
  • Full time student during the preceding academic semester,
  • Intend to return to school next semester, and
  • Has not participated in the Young Canada Works program with Pioneer Acres for two or more years.

Employment Period and Hours

  • May 1 through August 19
  • 35 hours/week (5 days a week for 7.5 hours a day)
  • Weekend work required
  • Remuneration: $18.00/hour
  • Museum Summer Hours:
    • Thursday through Monday
    • 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Tasks and Responsibilities

Typical responsibilities include:

  • Guiding visitors on tours of our grounds, providing information, and endeavoring to answer questions that may arise.
  • Perform cataloging activities to populate PA’s PastPerfect database and tag our artifacts.
  • Properly assess, handle and store artifacts and library materials that align with best techniques and practices.
  • Identify images and create content for PA social media channels.
  • Assist with school tours and our other visitors as needed.
  • Assist with public reference requests for information by phone, email and in-person as needed.

Here are some of the qualities we are looking for:

  • Have an interest in historical records and pursuing a career in the museum or history field.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office is an asset.
  • Data entry skills and knowledge of database functions is an asset.
  • Prior experience with cataloging is preferable but not necessary.
  • Ability to manage a social media platform.
  • The ability to initiate and carry out projects independently and work closely with the curator is required.
